HAR KI DUN VALLEY TREK
Sankri
Located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand which contains the source of both the Ganges from Gangotri and Yamuna from Yamunotri rivers, is the Govind Pashu Vihar National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary. Within the park lies the beautiful Kedarkantha. Nestled comfortably in the higher reaches of Garhwal Himalayas this moderate trek not only attracts seasoned trekkers but beginners as well.
The trek is an amalgamation of everything a traveler would want. It has beautiful, dense-immersive forests, gorgeous clearings, rich flora and fauna, trails, striking campsites and not to forget the oh so beautiful sunsets.
The climb to the peak of Kedarkantha starts from a small quaint parish called as Sankri. It’s astonishing to eyewitness 13 peaks of the Himalayan range from the Kedarkantha peak. Moreover, there is a lake called Juda-ka-talab, as per the local folklore, once upon a time Lord Shiva meditated at Kedarkantha. Its name implies so from the droplet fallen from Shiva's Hair to form this lake named as Juda-ka-talab.
12 kms into the trek and attaining a height of 12500 ft above sea level, what one sees is one of the most enthralling and mesmerizing pictorial view of Mighty Himalayas – covered in snow. The Kedarkantha trek has gained its recognition owing to the snow that is spread over the region up until the month of April. One of the highlights of the trek is also the pristine view of Swargarohini and Bandarpoonch. Kedarkantha trek is one of the few treks in the Indian Himalayas where you can trek for most part of the year. Kedarkantha trek is accessible for almost 10 months of the year except July and August (heavy monsoons).
One of the most popular trek of all time, Har ki DunTrek is a delight, both for seasoned trekkers as well as amateurs. With its feet touching the beautiful and rustic village of Sankri, about 7 hours away from Dehradun, Har Ki Dun sits firmly at a height of 12,500 feet. Despite its (staggering) height, the trail is a fairly easy one and can be accomplished even by beginners.

Activity: From Purola to Sankri: A Tranquil Trekking Transition.
Purola is the last big settlement on the route, with a large market. So, it is recommended that the
trekkers buy anything they might have missed out on in Purola itself. It is also the last village where
most of the mobile networks work. The road after Purola winds through a beautiful pine forest. We
arrive at Sankri by early evening. It is a small village with a central market lined with a few shops.
The village has numerous apple orchards, which are harvested starting in late summer.
After breakfast, you'll board an SUV and drive through a bumpy forest road and multiple streams.
After an hour, we'll reach Taluka, a small village with a few shops, from where you will trek to Puani
Garat, the first campsite, and stay overnight in the camp.
After checking out from your homestay or guest house, the driver will pick you up and drop you off
at a small village called ‘Taluka’

Taluka, and this is where you start trekking to the first campsite at Pauni Garat. The trail passes
through the stony path with the fragrance of cedar trees, and you’ll be walking close to the river
Supin, which is gushing through rapids. After a few hours of walking past the villages of Daatmer
and Gangad, we continue our trek till we reach the secluded campsite at Puani Garaat.
Begin your day after breakfast by trekking to Osla, the final village. The steep trail leads to Kalkatidhar campsite, offering a mesmerizing sunset and an overnight stay amidst nature.
Activity: Osla Village: Scenic Halt on the Har ki Dun Trail The landscape surrounding Osla is full of
terraced farms. Osla is the last village on the route to Har ki Dun. While trekking, you will spot a
temple and pass by bushes of orchids, fleece flowers, and sunflowers. The journey today is rather
short, which allows for acclimatizing to the high altitude and preparing for the next day's journey.
Early start to explore the glacier basin, adorned with alpine meadows in the enchanting Har ki Dun
Valley. Bask in the beauty of towering pines and peaks—Swargarohini, Black Peak, and Hata
Peak—before returning to Kalkatiyadhar camp.

small tea shop beside the waterfall.
Trek for some more time to reach the confluence of the rivers Supin and Ruinsara to get a view of
the snow-clad peaks of Ruinsara Valley, including Black Peak, the highest peak in the region.
Upon reaching the final point, relax and soak in the environment for some time before continuing
the trek to Marinda Tal, 2-3 km ahead.
After our short visit to Marinda Tal, we make our return journey back to Kalkatidhar on the same
route, as it becomes much easier to go all downhill from here.
After a hearty breakfast, retrace your steps via Osla village to Pauni Gharat. Descend gradually,
savoring moments with villagers and a closer look at village life.
Activity: Scenic Ramble: Osla Village to Puani Garat via Valley Views
On the route, we come across a good view of the trail to Osla and see the valley descend towards
Taluka, around the curve of the ridge where the two streams coming from Har Ki Dun and
Ruinsara, respectively, converge.
After reaching Osla, one can roam about in the village, talk to locals, and soak in the Garhwali
culture.
We continue our journey from here to our earlier campsite at Puani Garaat, where we can spend
time basking in the sun.
